Frost Depth & Climate Adjustments
In freeze/thaw climates, saturated base material can heave and scale. Slab performance often improves more from drainage and mix design than from simply increasing thickness.
What changes in freeze/thaw regions
- Drainage becomes critical: keep base from staying wet.
- Mix design: air entrainment may be required for durability.
- Edges are vulnerable: consider thicker edges or better base at perimeters.
- Deicing salts: increase scaling risk if finishing and curing are poor.
Practical adjustments
- Increase PSI and durability specs (work with supplier).
- Improve base thickness and compaction consistency.
- Use a curing plan—especially in cold/dry/windy conditions.
